Oh! You Pretty Things

Dec. 17–Dec. 23, 2017

Oh! You Pretty Things is a week long installation-happening-hang-out-last-minute-Christmas-bazaar-tag-sale-event taking place in the front room at Gordon Robichaux, December 17th through 23rd.

Toys, books, Christmas ornaments and decorations, vinyl records, knickknacks, faux flora, fauna-based costume items, postcards, paintings, an edition of no-surprise surprise bags, ephemera, lamps, neckties, drawings, prints, vintage magazines (and more!) will be on view and for sale. All are definitely suitable for gift giving to yourself or others. Oh! You Pretty Things is a storage-unit-sized collage of pop cultural artifacts and one-of-a-kind items.

Found and collected over 30 years and taken from Yarritu's personal archives, Oh! You Pretty Things will be comprised of treasure culled from flea-markets, thrift stores, antique shops, city streets, and tag sales all over North America, and a couple other continents.

The Oh! You Pretty Things installation will continually evolve as the week progresses; after objects are purchased and leave the space, new items will appear, encouraging multiple visits and fresh discoveries. Please note that more than a few of these items have also guest starred in photo shoots with high-fashion fashion models. Pedigreed or mutt, all are now seeking new owners. Yarritu's collection—born of his obsessive interest in material culture, ephemera, and design—enters back into circulation during this limited holiday-time event.

David Yarritu is a photographer, independent art director, prop and still-life stylist, and set designer. His sensibility is shaped by decades of work in fashion, art, music, and design; by his time in London as a member of the pop group ABC; and his participation in the New York East Village 1980s art scene, where he performed at the legendary clubs, AREA and The Pyramid. He has collaborated on innumerable projects with photographers, artists, fashion designers, and interior designers in and about New York City for over 30 years. Yarritu is the founder of The Leather Squirrel, a semi-annual salon and dance party. He collects vintage queer zines and ephemera, and is currently archiving hundreds of his own Polaroid photographs. His Polaroids from early Wigstock festivals were recently presented at NADA New York by Gordon Robichaux, and are featured in a new book celebrating New York Magazine’s 50th anniversary.
