Tabboo! (Stephen Tashjian, b. 1959; Worcester, Massachusetts) has exhibited his work extensively in New York, including at Gordon Robichaux (2022, 2021, 2019, 2017); Karma (2023, 2022, 2020); Howl! Happening (2016); Participant Inc. (2008); Paul Kasmin Gallery (2006), Rupert Goldsworthy (1999 and 1995); Wooster Gardens (1998); Tricia Collins Grand Salon (1995); Tom Cugliani (1994); LIMBO (1986); ABC No Rio (1982); and Lucky Strike Gallery (1982).
He has participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Matthew Marks, New York; New Museum, New York; Grey Art Gallery, New York University; Shoot the Lobster, New York; Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York; Rental Gallery, New York; White Columns, New York; Pat Hearn Gallery, New York; ABC No Rio, New York; Artists Space, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Parker Gallery, Los Angeles; Karma, Los Angeles; Artist Curated Projects, Los Angeles; GAVLAK, Los Angeles; Herald St, London; White Cube, London; Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio; ICA Boston; Colette, Paris; and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
His work is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; ICA Miami; and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
Tabboo! has performed extensively; created murals for public projects; designed flyers, album covers, and ephemera for contexts including Wigstock, Deee-Lite, Book of Love, Printed Matter, A1 Records, Studio Voltaire, White Columns); produced illustrations for major publications (French Vogue, Italian Vogue, M – Le magazine du Monde, Artforum, Interview, Paper, Penguin Paperbacks’ The Naked Civil Servant by Quentin Crisp) and flyers and posters for underground venues (Club 57, Pyramid Club); and collaborated with fashion designers (Supreme, Marc Jacobs, Fiorucci, Willi Wear). He has been a muse to artists and photographers including Nan Goldin, Steven Klein, Steven Meisel, and Ai Weiwei.
Tabboo!’s work was reviewed in numerous publications including Artforum, The New Yorker, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Cultured Magazine, VICE, Candy Magazine, the Miami Herald, and the Financial Times.
Five books dedicated to his art have been published: Cityscapes (Gordon Robichaux/Karma, 2022); Tabboo! The Art of Stephen Tashjian (Damiani, 2013), Paintings by Tabboo! (Howl Arts Inc., 2016), and Pearl: Poems by Vincent Katz, Paintings by Tabboo! (Powerhouse Books, 1998).
